Careers

The Careers Department is located in the Careers Room – a well-used and busy room that all students can access every lunchtime, and by appointment at other times.

Facilities:

As well as having well-stocked and up-to-date paper resources, covering careers from Anthropology to Zoology, the Careers Room has three computer terminals for students to access the internet and various careers computer aided guidance programmes to help their research.

What we do:

By far the largest part of Mrs Pike’s job is individual guidance – one to one careers interviews with students, discussing their aims, aspirations, ideas (or lack of them!) and trying to see how that all fits in with their strengths and weaknesses. She helps them explore what options are out there, gently challenges any misconceptions, supports with research and hopefully encourages students to aim high but realistically for them as an individual. The confident and informed decisions the students make lead to happy transitions to sixth form and beyond. All students, whatever year group are welcome in the Careers Room, but the bulk of Mrs Pike’s time is spent with students in Year 9, 11 and 12 and 13, reflecting the important decisions that have to be made at these times.

Mrs Pike is actively involved with the PSHE programme from Year 7 through to Year 13, and provides lesson plans for tutors to deliver and arranges for visitors to come to school and talk about their careers/jobs.
