Welcome to the website of King Henry VIII Preparatory School, Coventry
King Henry VIII Preparatory School (KHPS) is a school for children
aged from 3 –11 years of age. We are the preparatory school
to King Henry VIII H.M.C. 11 – 18 School. However, whilst
there are very close links with the senior school, KHPS is a distinct
school with its own headmaster and management team.
At KHPS
our aim is simple: we hope to provide children with a wonderful
start to their education. We take children as early as 3 years
of age and our intention is to give them the necessary foundations
which will lead to success in later education and hopefully in
the adult life. Beyond this we hope to provide all our pupils with
a happy and memorable time at their first school, which they will
enjoy at the time and look back on fondly after they have left.
Our curriculum is broad. There is plenty of emphasis on the basics
but we also teach many other subjects within the curriculum and
provide a very wide range of extra-curricular opportunities.
Our
school is situated on two campuses, literally a few minutes’ walk
from each other, to the south side of Coventry. The two campuses
are called Swallows and Hales.
Swallows has its own 3½ acre,
self-contained campus on the Kenilworth Road, opposite Coventry’s
Memorial Park. Here children aged from 3 – 8 (Nursery to
Year 3) are educated in very small classes usually a maximum 16
children on a site which has some of the very best facilities
in Coventry. Children on this campus are largely ‘class taught’ which
means they have one teacher for most subjects. However, some specialist
teachers in key subjects are used, even for children in our Nursery.
The Hales campus is situated just down the road from Swallows,
on a site adjacent to King Henry VIII Senior School. At Hales children
are taught for the final three years of their primary education,
from the age of 8 to 11. Hales represents a significant step forward,
at just the right time for junior aged children. Children at this
campus are taught by teachers specialising in a small number of
subjects in what might be described
as a ‘pre-secondary
learning environment’, in a range of excellent facilities.
The atmosphere
of our School is traditional yet modern and friendly. We look to
achieve the good, traditional standards expected of independent
schools ─ not just academically but in terms of manners and
behaviour ─ yet in a thoroughly up-to-date teaching environment.
Our pupils are expected to know how to behave and work but there
is also a friendliness and happiness at the School which we hope
can be felt by all.
King Henry VIII Preparatory School is part
of the Coventry School Foundation, a Coventry based educational
charity which also owns King
Henry VIII Senior School (11 – 18),
the Bablake schools (7 – 18) and Cheshunt School (3 – 7).
The Headmaster of King Henry VIII Preparatory School is a member
of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools (I.A.P.S.).
