Informal Music Concert 3rd February 2012
At teatime after school on Friday some of our budding musicians took part in the third of our informal music concerts this year. These provide an opportunity for children who have just started to play an instrument or who who are working up difficult pieces for examinations and concerts to perform in front of a supportive audience. Friday's concert was packed, showing these performance opportunities are becoming increasingly popular. My thanks to all the staff and parents who attended. The children were fantastic, as ever!

Stars in their Eyes
Our annual Stars in their Eyes competition took place on Friday evening 28th January. Amazingly the standard was even higher than last year with so many children aged 7 to 11 performing with immense confidence and showing great star quality. It was a superb evening's entertainment which started at 7.00 and did not finish until 10.00pm! So I suspect there were a few very tired children on Saturday morning!

The main speaker was Ricky Bryniaski, one of our ex pupils. Perhaps this will be the start of a lifelong interest or even, just like Ricky, some will be inspired to play the sport at a high level.

Reception Results in top 10 of the country!
At KHPS the progress of each child is very carefully assessed. One of the assessment tools used by the School is called PIPS - Performance Indicators for Primary Schools. With these tests children's underlying academic ability is assessed alongside their performance in Reading and Mathematics. The School receives data from these tests which shows how much progress each child has made each year as well as how well the school's pupils have performed in comparison to other independent and maintained schools.

Year 4 Play: Jungle Book
On Wednesday 17th March our Year 4 pupils performed their annual production. This year it was Jungle Book, an adaptation of Kipling's famous story. The production itself was a super piece of cross-curricular work on the part of the teachers, having links with the study of India in Geography also Art, English and Music. Four long poems about the animals, which were performed in the play, were written by the children themselves and the background music was composed by other children in Year 4. The result was a swirling mixture of music, dance, singing, acting and movement. It was absolutely fantastic! All costumes and props were made by the staff.

Photos Discovered in Secret Attic
At the Swallows Campus there is a secret attic! What looks like a cupboard door in Mrs Higginson's office actually leads into a vast attic with its own window. In there are all kinds of treasures from the past. The most fascinating are boxes of documents and photos left behind by the school's founder, Reverend Kenelm Swallow M.C.

Early Years Nativity Play
This was brilliant and I must pay tribute to my staff: to achieve a performance of this quality with 90 children aged mainly 3 and 4 years of age (with a few mature 5 years olds!) was extraordinary. The Sleepy Shepherd was not only charming in the way all infant nativities are, it was also great entertainment. I think a few stars have been born because the acting this year was particularly good and I must pay tribute to Austin who played the sleepy shepherd and was on stage throughout the show.

Parents' Association Gardening Project
On Saturday 7th November a band of very enthusiastic parents and one headmaster began the Early Years Gardening Project. Armed with £1500 from the P.A. and under the leadership of Mr Nick Smith and Mrs Karen Francisco, a small group of parents spent several happy hours beginning to create a garden which will give generatiions of children at Swallows a great deal of pleasure and the opportunity to explore the outdoor world. A fantastic start was made and we should like to thank all parents who attended. However, there is still much left to do in the next few weeks and any parents who feel they can give up a couple hours on a Saturday morning would be very much welcomed next week and in the weeks to follow.
